A trio of officers lost their lives and at least 15 people sustained injuries in a seemingly intentional gas explosion at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The detonation took place as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to enforce an removal notice for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

All three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the location and one more individual who fled after the explosion was found soon after. All three have been taken to medical facility.

The detonation could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the area revealed the building reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that efforts had been made to evict the three family members in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The head of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, said the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to financial obligations accumulated by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to talk with the family members who had locked themselves into the home. When the officers arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the siblings caused the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Claudio Papagno told the media.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the blast precisely impacted our personnel,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the property, the minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the incident comprised 11 other members of the police force as well as three members of national police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

The prosecutor believed the blast had taken place on a level above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the blast, he said personnel had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being opened”.

Local Response

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants informed reporters, adding that the three had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto joined other political leaders in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had been killed in the service of their country.
