The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
