NBA game action

Miami put up eighty-six first-half scores against the Grizzlies

The Heat claimed a overwhelming 146-114 win over the Grizzlies in their initial NBA match after guard Rozier was detained for alleged unlawful gambling.

Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was also detained as part of a sweeping federal probe into illegal gambling. Both men contest the claims.

But, the Miami team were focused as they recorded eighty-six opening half points to lead Memphis by thirty-nine after two quarters, the biggest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37-year history.

Bam Adebayo led the way with twenty-four points and afterwards stated Terry had the support of the team.

"We stand behind him. Full support," Adebayo said. "You support him through and through. He's like family ultimately."

Heat coach Spoelstra added: "Terry is a person who is very dear to all of us. He has made a real positive impact on our team.

"We send our thoughts and support for him as he faces this."

Portland also secured their first game since the detentions, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Chauncey's absence and guiding the squad to a decisive 139-119 win against the Golden State Warriors.

"Everyone experienced positive times with Chauncey and how he coached," Tiago remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but our focus is on the game."

League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Arrests

Speaking about the detentions for the first time, league head Silver stated he was "very upset" by the incidents of the past few days.

"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and supporters than the fairness of the competition," he told Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."

Silver also mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's actions in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Charlotte Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.

"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the gambling firms," he continued.

"We then looked into that situation and were open regarding it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.

"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the NBA can't do.

"Therefore, we've been cooperating from that point. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an charge.

"And 30 months after, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in justice to Terry.

"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise in this case between protecting people's rights and investigating."
