A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was proposed pending a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
